For more than a month, a terrified stray dog survived beside the railroad tracks in Compton, California.
She was filthy, thin, and covered in oil and grime. Every day, she moved between the dangerous tracks and a nearby parking lot, hiding beneath broken-down cars as if the world had already taught her not to trust anyone.
Neighbors had seen her. Some left food and water, and that small kindness may be the only reason she stayed alive.
But the dog refused to let anyone close.
When rescuer Caroline Hayes, founder of a nonprofit animal rescue, arrived, the frightened pup was nowhere to be seen. After searching the area, Caroline finally looked under the parked cars.
There she was.
Dirty. Trembling. Hiding in the shadows.
