Early Friday morning, staff at Richmond Animal Care & Control received a call they never expected.
A small dog had been found abandoned inside a carrier — left in a mailbox at a home where she did not belong.

No one knows how long she had been there. No one knows who left her behind. All anyone knew in that heartbreaking moment was that a frightened little dog had been discarded as if she were something unwanted.
The shelter has since named her Mabel, and she is now safe in their care.

Her condition and personality have not yet been fully shared, but after such a confusing and terrifying ordeal, what she needs most is time, quiet, and kindness. Instead of being held by the person who should have protected her, Mabel was left alone in a carrier, waiting for someone to notice her.
Thankfully, someone did.
For now, Mabel is no longer trapped, no longer forgotten, and no longer alone. She has a warm place to rest, gentle hands around her, and a real chance to feel safe again.
One tiny dog was abandoned in the most heartbreaking way — but her story did not end inside that mailbox.
