Ami was a tiny light-brown puppy with fluffy fur and innocent eyes that always sparkled with hope.
He had no family.
No owner.
No cozy house waiting for him.
The only place he called home was a worn-out piece of cardboard beneath the awning of a closed shop on a quiet street.
Every morning before the sun rose, Ami stretched his little legs, shook the dust from his fur, and began another day searching for food.
He wandered through markets after they closed.
He sniffed around small restaurants.
Sometimes he found a few crumbs of bread.
Sometimes he found nothing at all.
But every night, no matter how far he had walked, he always returned to the same piece of cardboard.
It was the only place that felt familiar.
What nobody knew was that today was Ami’s birthday.
Exactly one year ago, he had entered the world.
There were no balloons.
No birthday candles.
No one to whisper, “Happy Birthday.”
To everyone else, he was just another stray puppy.
By late afternoon, Ami’s stomach was painfully empty.
He had searched for hours without finding a single bite to eat.
Just as he was about to give up, he noticed a small chicken bone lying beside a trash bin outside a food stall.
His eyes lit up.
His tiny tail wagged with excitement.
To anyone else, it was worthless.
To Ami, it was the best birthday present he could imagine.
He carefully picked it up in his mouth and turned to leave.
Before he could take more than a few steps, a man stormed out of the restaurant.
Seeing the puppy near the entrance, the man shouted angrily.
Startled, Ami froze.
He lowered his ears and slowly stepped backward, still holding the little bone.
The frightened puppy didn’t understand what he had done wrong.
The man rushed toward him.
Ami dropped the bone and tried to run.
In his panic, he stumbled and rolled across the sidewalk.
The precious bone slid into a storm drain and disappeared forever.

Ami slowly stood up.
His little body trembled.
He walked back to the drain and stared into the darkness below.
He sniffed once.
Twice.
As if hoping the bone might somehow come back.
It never did.
As evening fell, the little puppy quietly returned to his cardboard bed.
The city lights glowed around him.
People laughed with their families.
Restaurants filled with warm meals and cheerful conversations.
Ami curled into a tiny ball.
His birthday was almost over.
His stomach was empty.
But somehow, he still looked toward every passing stranger with hopeful eyes.
Just before midnight, a young woman finished closing her nearby flower shop.
She noticed the tiny puppy sleeping on the cardboard.
His little body shook from the cold.
She quietly walked over.
Ami opened his eyes.
For a brief moment, they simply looked at one another.
Then, despite everything life had put him through, his tail began to wag.
The woman knelt beside him and gently placed a warm bowl of chicken and rice on the ground.
Ami sniffed it carefully.
Then looked back at her.
Almost as if asking,
“Is this really for me?”
When he finished eating, the woman noticed a faded ribbon tied loosely around his neck.
Attached to it was a tiny handwritten tag with a date.
She smiled sadly.
“So today is your birthday…”
She gently stroked his fluffy head.
“Then let’s not end it like this.”
She carried Ami home that night.
Before going to bed, she prepared a tiny dog-friendly birthday cupcake made with pumpkin and chicken.
She placed a single candle beside it—not to blow out, but to remind herself that every life deserves to be celebrated.
As Ami curled up in a soft bed for the very first time, she whispered,
“Happy Birthday, little Ami.”
The puppy closed his eyes and rested his head in her lap.
He didn’t understand birthdays.
He didn’t understand wishes.
But he understood love.
And after spending an entire year waiting for someone to choose him, Ami finally realized that sometimes the greatest gift isn’t a birthday cake.
It’s finding the one person who makes every day afterward feel like a celebration.
