The Dog Followed the Old Woman Into the Forest Every Day, Until One Day She Could No Longer Come Home

by Ack1fastonlinevn

Every early morning, while mist still covered the mountain path, people would see an elderly woman with a bent back slowly carrying her basket into the forest. Walking beside her, sometimes running ahead and sometimes turning back to wait, was a small yellow dog familiar to everyone in the village. No one knew exactly when the dog had come into her life. They only knew that for a long time, the two had depended on each other to survive.

The old woman’s life was so poor that every day, she had to climb into the forest to collect dry branches, then carry them down the mountain to exchange for a little money, rice, and food. The path was long, steep, and rough, but she never seemed to walk it alone. The little dog always followed closely beside her, as if he understood that she was the only family he had left.

In the forest, while the old woman bent down to pick up dry branches, the dog would run around searching for smaller sticks and bring them back to her. He could not do anything grand, but in his own way, he always tried to make her burden a little lighter. Each time she saw him carrying a small branch back and placing it beside her, the old woman would smile gently, her eyes filled with love.

When enough firewood had been gathered, she tied the bundle onto an old handcart. On the steep way down the mountain, the little dog would strain himself pulling from the front, while the old woman walked behind to steady the cart. One weak old woman and one small dog kept supporting each other like that, day after day. It was a simple sight, but anyone who saw it could not help feeling moved. In the middle of a hard life, they had chosen to stay beside each other like true family.

At night, inside their small, humble home, the old woman would sit by the porch and break a small corn cake in half. One half she gave to the dog, and only then did she keep the other half for herself. She did not have much, but whatever little she had, she always shared with her four-legged friend. The dog would curl up beside her feet, peaceful and obedient, as if being near her was already enough to make him happy.

Those quiet days continued until one gloomy morning.

As usual, the old woman went into the forest. But that day, her steps were much slower than before. Her body looked heavier, weaker, and more tired. The little dog stayed close to her side, constantly looking up at her as if he could sense that something was wrong. But life was too difficult, so she kept walking. She still needed firewood to exchange for rice. She still had to keep going just to get through another day.

Halfway down the mountain, before the bundle of wood could be brought home, the old woman suddenly staggered and collapsed beside the grass.

The dog panicked. He rushed to her side, ran around her, nudged her hand and shoulder with his nose, and barked again and again as if trying to wake her up.

But she lay still.

She could not stand up anymore.

The dog did not understand what had happened. He only knew that the person who had walked with him into the forest every day was now lying motionless. He did not leave. He did not abandon her for even a moment. After barking desperately beside her, the dog suddenly ran down toward the village road, barking loudly at people passing by, then ran back up the mountain as if trying to lead them to where she was.

The villagers sensed something was wrong and hurried after him.

When they reached the place, they found the old woman lying still beside the familiar bundle of firewood. The little dog stood close to her, looking at everyone with confused, frightened eyes. One villager knelt down to check on her, then silently lowered his head. No one needed to say anything. Everyone understood that it was already too late.

The old woman had collapsed from exhaustion on the very path she had walked every day.

And this time, she could no longer return home with her dog.

Late that afternoon, the villagers carried the old woman down the mountain. The little dog walked quietly beside them, his head lowered. He no longer barked. He no longer ran ahead like he used to. The path was still the same path. The old cart was still there. The bundle of firewood still lay silently. But everything had changed forever.

It was the first time the dog had gone down the mountain without her by his side.

After that day, people often saw the little dog lying beside the old cart in front of the small house. Whenever he heard footsteps outside the gate, he would lift his head, his eyes full of waiting. Perhaps he still believed that the old woman would come back one day, that she would call him again so they could go into the forest together like before.

But the person he was waiting for would never walk through that gate again.

The most heartbreaking part was that the dog did not understand what death meant. He did not know that some people, once they leave, can never return. He only knew that the person who had always been beside him had suddenly disappeared, and from that day on, all he had left was silent waiting.

The story of the old woman and the little dog brought tears to many eyes. In their poor and difficult life, they had no wealth and no comfortable home, but they had something not everyone is lucky enough to have: a bond that was sincere until the very end.

The old woman used her tired, humble life to love the little dog.

And the dog, with unconditional loyalty and affection, followed her into the forest every day, helped her pull firewood, and stayed by her side until her final moment.

Some goodbyes are quiet, but they can haunt a heart forever.

And some waiting, even when there is no hope left, continues endlessly inside the heart of a small soul who only knows how to love with everything he has.
