Bane is only 13 weeks old, but he has already been returned to the shelter after what should have been the beginning of a new life.
The cream and black shepherd puppy is currently at Devore Animal Shelter in San Bernardino, California. Staff and volunteers describe him as an 18-pound puppy sitting on the concrete floor of Kennel D24, watching people walk past.
Just a few days ago, Bane left the shelter with a family. They knew he had an upper respiratory infection. They also knew he was taking prescribed medication. When they carried him out, it looked like he had finally found people who would help him heal.
But that hope lasted only one day.
By the next morning, Bane was back at the shelter.
The little puppy does not understand what it means to be “returned.” He does not understand that some people may have seen his illness as too much trouble. He only knows that the family he left with is gone, and that he is alone again in a kennel.
His condition now makes his situation more urgent. Bane has yellow nasal discharge and is on his second round of antibiotics. In a shelter, sickness can spread quickly, especially among puppies whose immune systems are still developing.
What Bane needs most is care, patience, and a safe place to recover.
Instead of resting on a couch or being held by a family while he finishes his medication, he is lying on cold concrete again. At only 13 weeks old, he is one of the dogs most at risk.
Bane’s story is painful because he came so close to having a home, only to lose it almost immediately.
Now he is back where he started — sick, confused, and waiting for someone who will not give up on him after one day.
