A Puppy Broken on the Side of the Road
Prairie’s life nearly ended on a busy St. Louis highway.
The young dog was struck by a car on Highway 55, leaving her helpless, terrified, and in unbearable pain. Cars continued moving around her, but a group of compassionate passersby saw her suffering and knew they could not leave her there.
Her body was badly injured, yet she was still alive.
Carefully, they lifted Prairie into their vehicle and rushed to get her help, not knowing whether she would survive the night.
The Injuries Were Worse Than Anyone Feared
At the emergency clinic, X-rays revealed the heartbreaking truth.
Prairie had three broken legs. One limb was shattered, and another injury was an open fracture, making it especially dangerous. She had also suffered pulmonary contusions, which caused fluid to build around her lungs and made breathing harder.
Her pain was severe.
Her condition was fragile.
The medical team did what they could to stabilize her, but the first outlook was devastating. Because her injuries were so serious, humane euthanasia was suggested.
But the people who had saved her from the highway were not ready to give up.

The rescuers reached out to Stray Rescue of St. Louis, hoping someone might see the same thing they saw in Prairie: a young dog still fighting to live.
The organization answered the call.
Prairie was transferred into their care, where she received the emergency support she desperately needed. Even through pain, fear, and exhaustion, she showed a will to survive that touched everyone around her.
She was badly broken.
But she was not defeated.
A Painful Road to Recovery
Prairie’s treatment was intense from the start.
She needed oxygen therapy to help her breathe, strong pain medication to keep her comfortable, and careful splinting to protect her damaged legs. Her body had been through a violent trauma, so every decision had to be made with caution.
Then came two major surgeries on her front legs.
Doctors worked to repair the shattered bones using plates and screws, giving Prairie a real chance to heal. Her nurse, Stephanie, stayed close through the difficult recovery, watching over the little dog as she fought through pain one day at a time.

Prairie’s back leg remained the biggest concern.
Because it was an open fracture, the risk was much higher. Amputation was considered, but the medical team still hoped the leg could be saved.
