A small dog was found in a terrifying situation near the Rehoboth Canal after somehow becoming trapped high in a tree with no way down.
The frightened pup was spotted about 10 feet above the canal, clinging to a branch as the water moved below. A couple noticed him during a morning outing and became worried when they returned hours later and saw that he was still there. By then, it was clear the little dog could not escape on his own.
With his life possibly at risk, they called for help.
The Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company responded to the scene. Assistant Chief Ryan Peters volunteered to reach the stranded dog, but getting to him was not simple. To reach the tree, Peters had to wade through thigh-deep water and cross about 300 yards of marshland.

When he finally got close, he found the small dog perched on a knot in the tree, trembling and unable to move up or down. The pup was scared, exhausted, and trapped in a place where one wrong movement could have ended badly.
Peters used an attic ladder and brought a blanket to help calm the dog. Slowly and gently, he coaxed the frightened animal close enough to wrap him safely. Once secured, the dog was carried down from the tree and brought back to solid ground.

The rescue ended with a quiet, emotional moment. After being saved, the exhausted dog fell asleep, finally warm and safe in the arms of the people who had come to help him.
But the story did not end there.
The dog had no collar and no microchip, making it difficult to identify his owner. Animal Control took custody of him, and rescuers also noticed a bald spot on his ribcage, suggesting he may have been exposed to the elements for some time.
For now, the little dog is being cared for by the Brandywine Valley SPCA in Georgetown while efforts continue to find his family.
He was found frightened, alone, and clinging to a tree above the canal with no clear way out. Thanks to quick-thinking witnesses and a determined firefighter, he is safe now — and hopefully one step closer to finding the home he belongs to.
