The old dog had long forgotten what it felt like to have a home.
His once-beautiful black-and-white coat was now stained with mud, dust, and oil from years of sleeping on cold sidewalks.
His muzzle had turned gray with age.
His legs shook whenever he walked too far.
Yet every morning, he still woke up before sunrise and wandered through the city in search of something to eat.
Today was different.
It was his birthday.
No one knew how old he really was.
Not even the old dog himself.
He only knew that every birthday had passed exactly the same way—
Alone.
Hungry.
Forgotten.
The streets were crowded with people carrying colorful gift bags and balloons.
Children laughed as they walked beside their parents.
The old dog quietly watched them pass.
His empty stomach growled, but he kept walking.
By late afternoon, hunger had become unbearable.
His tired legs carried him behind a large bakery where piles of garbage were stacked beside a metal fence.
He slowly sniffed through torn paper bags and empty food boxes.
Most of it was spoiled.
Then something sweet caught his attention.
Hidden beneath a cardboard box was a birthday cake.
Someone had thrown it away after a celebration.
The white cream was covered with dust.
Small leaves clung to the frosting.
One corner had been crushed beneath other garbage.
The old dog stared at it for several seconds.
His cloudy eyes softened.
Perhaps this was the closest thing he would ever have to a birthday cake.
He slowly stepped closer.
With one trembling paw, he gently brushed away the dirt on top.
Then he used the other paw to wipe away the leaves stuck to the cream.
Patiently…
Carefully…
Almost as though he didn’t want to ruin it.
When it looked a little cleaner, he lowered his head and took a tiny bite.
His old tail moved slowly from side to side.
The cake wasn’t fresh.
It wasn’t beautiful anymore.
But to him…
It tasted like kindness.
He finished only part of it.
The rest he carefully nudged beneath a piece of cardboard, perhaps hoping he could return later if hunger came again.
As evening arrived, dark clouds covered the sky.
Snowflakes slowly began falling.
The cold wind blew harder with every passing minute.
The old dog quietly left the bakery and made his way back to the place he called home.
Beneath an old bridge, beside a cracked concrete pillar, lay a torn piece of cardboard.
It had been his bed for many winters.
He slowly lowered himself onto it.
His old bones ached from the cold.
Snow drifted into the shelter with every gust of wind.
The city above glowed with warm lights.
Families gathered around dinner tables.
Birthday candles were being blown out somewhere nearby.
The old dog simply curled himself into a small ball.
His stomach was finally a little less empty.
That discarded birthday cake had become the only birthday meal he had received.
He rested his tired head on his paws.
Outside, the snow continued falling in silence.
Before closing his eyes, the old dog looked toward the night sky beyond the bridge.
His tail gave one gentle wag.
Perhaps no one had remembered his birthday.

Perhaps no one even knew he existed.
But somehow…
That forgotten cake hidden in a pile of garbage had made him feel, if only for a few moments, that the world hadn’t completely forgotten him.
He slowly drifted to sleep beneath the bridge while snow covered the quiet streets.
And although he had no family…
No presents…
And no one to whisper “Happy Birthday…”
He carried one small hope into his dreams—
That maybe…
Before another birthday came, someone would finally see the old black-and-white dog…
Call him a good boy…
And give him a place to spend the rest of his birthdays in warmth instead of the cold.
