After more than two years of waiting, Clyde, the longest resident dog at City of Tracy Animal Services in Tracy, California, finally left the shelter with a forever family.
Clyde, a 6-year-old American Staffordshire terrier, had spent 831 days watching other dogs come and go. Shelter staff and volunteers knew him well, and his adoption became an emotional moment for everyone who had cared for him during his long stay.
But Clyde’s exit came with an unexpected surprise. He was not the only dog going home that day.
Thor, a 3-year-old pit bull-husky mix who had spent 280 days at the shelter, was adopted too. Both dogs walked out to the same vehicle, smiling and jumping in as if they understood their lives were finally changing.
The person behind the double adoption was Roberto, a volunteer from Indiana who had been in Tracy for a temporary work assignment. During his time there, he spent his free hours walking shelter dogs, sometimes taking out as many as six dogs a day.
Over time, Roberto formed a quiet bond with Clyde and Thor. They were both independent dogs who did not demand attention, but something about them stayed with him. As his work assignment neared its end, he realized he could not leave either dog behind.
Although Clyde and Thor had never met before the adoption, they began getting used to each other during the multi-day drive back to Indiana. Their kennels were placed side by side, giving them time to adjust as they left the shelter behind and headed toward a new life.
The shelter shared the farewell moment in a Facebook video, which quickly drew emotional reactions online. Viewers celebrated Clyde’s long-awaited freedom and Thor’s second chance, with many praising Roberto for giving both dogs the home they had waited so long to find.
For the shelter staff, the moment was unforgettable. Clyde had waited 831 days. Thor had waited 280.
And in the end, both left together — not as forgotten shelter dogs, but as beloved companions finally going home.
