I’m Ran, and Today Was My Birthday — But I Was Still Just Another Forgotten Shelter Dog

A Birthday Behind Shelter Walls

My name is Ran, and I live in a shelter.

Today was my birthday, but nothing felt different. There was no family waiting for me, no birthday treat, no new toy, and no warm voice calling my name.

I curled up in my little corner and listened to the sounds around me. Other dogs barked. Footsteps passed by. Doors opened and closed.

But no one came for me.

I Used to Believe Someone Would Choose Me

When I first arrived at the shelter, I was full of hope.

Every time visitors walked past, I lifted my head and wagged my tail. I imagined one of them stopping, smiling, and saying, “That’s the dog we want.”

I dreamed of a home where someone would remember my birthday. Maybe they would rub my belly, give me a small toy, or simply sit beside me long enough to make me feel loved.

But today, the hours passed slowly.

And I was still waiting.

No Treats, No Wishes, Just Silence

Birthdays should feel special.

Mine felt quiet.

I watched people come and go, hoping someone might notice that today mattered to me. I did not need a big celebration. I did not need cake or balloons.

I only wanted one kind word.

One gentle touch.

One person to make me feel like I had not been forgotten.

The Other Shelter Dogs Understand

I am not the only one waiting here.

The other dogs know this feeling too. We all dream of the same thing: a family, a soft bed, a door that opens because someone is coming home to us.

But on my birthday, that longing felt heavier.

Because another year of my life had passed, and I was still a shelter dog.

Still hoping.

Still watching.

Still waiting for someone to see me.

My Birthday Wish Is Simple

Tonight, I will close my eyes in the same corner where I began the day.

I will dream of a future where birthdays are not lonely anymore. A future where someone remembers me, loves me, and calls me family.

My name is Ran.

I am a shelter dog.

And even though no one wished me happy birthday today, I still hope that one day, someone will come and give me the only gift I truly want: a home.

My name is Ran - a shelter dog. I'm so sad because I didn't get any birthday wishes
