The white mother dog had once been beautiful.
But months of neglect had left her coat stained with dirt and mud. Her fur hung in tangled clumps, and her thin body showed signs of constant hunger.
Still, none of that mattered to her.
Because beside her lay the only things she cared about in the world.
Her puppies.
Every morning, she would curl herself around them, shielding them from the cold wind that slipped through the broken fence. Whenever they cried from hunger, she licked their tiny faces and pulled them closer.
No matter how hungry she was, she always let her puppies eat first.
They were her entire world.
But to her owner, the puppies were something else.
Money.
One morning, a truck pulled into the yard.
The white dog immediately sensed something was wrong.
Her puppies were playing nearby when the man walked toward them carrying a cardboard box.
One by one, he began picking them up.
The puppies whimpered in confusion.
The mother dog rushed forward.
Her tail wasn’t wagging.
Her body trembled with fear.
She gently grabbed the man’s pant leg with her mouth, trying to stop him.
Not to hurt him.
Only to beg him.
Please don’t take my babies.
But the man didn’t care.
His face twisted with anger.
He grabbed a broom leaning against the wall and swung it hard.
The wooden handle struck the mother dog’s side.
She yelped and stumbled backward.
Still, she tried again.
Again the broom came down.
This time across her shoulder.
The white dog collapsed onto the ground.
Yet even then, she crawled toward her puppies.
Desperate to protect them.
Desperate to keep her family together.
The man continued loading the puppies into the truck.
One by one, their cries faded into the distance.
And then they were gone.
The yard became silent.
The mother dog sat staring at the empty road long after the truck disappeared.
She didn’t understand where her babies had gone.
She only knew they weren’t coming back.
Days passed.
Then weeks.
The white dog waited.
Every sound made her lift her head.
Every passing vehicle made her run to the gate.

But her puppies never returned.
The owner stopped caring about her entirely.
Sometimes he forgot to feed her.
Other times, he simply didn’t bother.
When she became thirsty, he wouldn’t even fill her water bowl.
Instead, he would dump a small amount of water directly onto the dusty ground before walking away.
The thirsty dog would lower her head and desperately lick the muddy surface.
Tiny drops soaked into the dirt faster than she could drink them.
Still she tried.
Again and again.
Until the ground became dry.
Then she would sit quietly beside the empty patch of dirt.
Waiting for more.
Waiting for anything.
One afternoon, a woman walking through the neighborhood noticed something strange.
She saw the white dog lying beside a dried patch of mud.
The dog’s ribs were visible.
Her fur was filthy.
And when the owner came outside carrying water, he simply poured it onto the ground instead of into a bowl.
The woman watched in disbelief as the starving dog desperately licked the dirt.
Her heart shattered.
The next day she returned.
Then the day after that.
What she witnessed only became worse.
The dog was living alone.
Weak.
Hungry.
Heartbroken.
The woman contacted an animal rescue group immediately.
When rescuers arrived, they found the white dog lying quietly near the spot where her puppies once played.
She was so weak she barely lifted her head.
Yet when the rescuers approached gently, her tail moved.
Just a little.
Despite everything she had suffered.
Despite being beaten.
Despite losing her puppies.
Despite being forgotten.
She still wanted to trust.
The rescuers carefully carried her into their vehicle.
As they drove away, the white dog looked back at the yard one final time.
Perhaps she was hoping to see her puppies again.
Perhaps she was saying goodbye.
No one could know.
At the rescue center, she received food, clean water, and medical care.
For the first few days, she would hide pieces of food beneath her blanket.
The rescuers realized she had spent so long hungry that she was afraid every meal might be her last.
Slowly, her body began to heal.
But her heart took longer.
Sometimes she would stare quietly at groups of puppies playing nearby.
As if remembering the family she had lost.
Then one day, something beautiful happened.
A kind family visited the shelter.
They sat beside her.
Spoke softly.
And for the first time in months, the white dog rested her head in someone’s lap.
She fell asleep there.
Completely at peace.
Months later, her coat had become soft and bright again.
Her ribs were gone.
Her eyes sparkled with life.
And every evening, she slept inside a warm home where no one raised a broom and no one left her thirsty.
She never saw her puppies again.
But she finally found something she had been denied for so long.
Love.
And after everything she had endured, that love became the second chance she deserved.
