Scott Baker thought he had lost the dog who knew how to save him.
The Navy veteran had traveled from Iowa to Jacksonville, Florida, to help his son move into an apartment as he began serving in the Navy. By his side was Mal’i, his beloved American Staff and service dog — the one who stayed close when life felt overwhelming.
For Scott, Mal’i was not just a pet.
She was the dog who sensed when he was struggling. When he had an episode, she would wake him, comfort him, and remind him that he was not alone.

Then, in one terrifying moment, she was gone.
On Saturday night, Mal’i had only been outside for a few minutes near the Lux Apartments when she ran into the road and was struck by a truck. Terrified and hurt, she bolted.
Scott followed her as far as he could, desperate not to lose sight of her. But a few streets away, Mal’i disappeared.
For the next five days, Scott searched with the fear only a dog owner can understand. Somewhere in an unfamiliar city, his service dog was alone after being hit by a vehicle. He did not know if she was injured, hiding, scared, or still moving.
So he turned to social media.
He asked the Jacksonville community for help, hoping someone, somewhere, might see Mal’i and bring her back.
And people listened.
The search became a team effort. Strangers shared posts, watched for sightings, and kept hope alive. Then, just after midnight on Thursday, the message Scott had been praying for finally came.
Someone had seen a dog matching Mal’i’s description.
They sent photos.
Scott looked at them and knew.
It was her.

He rushed to the area where she had been spotted, and after five agonizing days, Mal’i was finally found safe.
The relief was overwhelming. Scott thanked the Jacksonville community for their love, dedication, and support, making it clear that bringing Mal’i home had taken more than one person. It had taken a city willing to care about a lost dog and the veteran who needed her.
Mal’i still needed to be fully checked by a veterinarian, so Scott decided not to leave Jacksonville right away. Before going home, he also wanted the community to have a chance to meet the dog they had helped save.

Her return meant more than the end of a search.
It meant Scott had his companion back.
The dog who knew when he was hurting.
The dog who woke him when he needed help.
The dog who made him feel safe.
Mal’i had been struck by a truck, vanished in fear, and spent five days missing in a city far from home.
But she survived.
And because strangers refused to look away, she made it back to the person who loved her most.
