Last week, Hanover Fire-EMS units rushed to a home on Blacksmith Drive after reports of a residential fire. When crews arrived, smoke was already coming from the attic, and the situation was dangerous. Nine units responded, working quickly to search the home and bring the fire under control.
But inside the smoke-filled house, someone small was still trapped.
Bailey, a little dog, was somewhere inside, frightened and surrounded by smoke with no way to get himself out.
During the search, firefighters found him.
One firefighter was able to pick Bailey up and carry him out of the burning home, away from the smoke and danger. Photos shared by the fire department appear to show Bailey receiving oxygen, likely because of smoke inhalation.
It was a terrifying moment, but Bailey had been found in time.
After the rescue, he was placed in the care of a local veterinarian so he could be checked and treated. The Lucky Paw Foundation also stepped in to help the family with the pet supplies Bailey would need during recovery.
For Bailey’s family, the rescue meant everything.
A house fire can take so much in minutes. But thanks to Hanover County Fire-EMS and the Metro Richmond Flying Squad, one precious life was carried out alive.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Bailey’s rescue is also a reminder of how fast emergencies can unfold. Hanover Fire-EMS encourages residents to check smoke detectors every month, replace batteries every six months, and replace smoke alarms according to the manufacturer’s recommended life cycle.
